Riot Games has updated the business model of LoL Esports, aiming to apply its experience with partner teams to Valorant

Riot Games has revamped the business model of LoL Esports, seeking to leverage its experience with partner teams in Valorant.

The head of Riot Games’ esports division, John Needham, has introduced a new business model for professional leagues in League of Legends (LCS, LEC, and LCK).

Now, the company plans to use a monetization model similar to that used for partner teams in the Valorant Champions Tour. Under the new model, clubs will receive 50% of the revenue from in-game items and cosmetics. Packs will be released not only for the Mid-Season Invitational and Worlds but also during regional league seasons.

According to Riot representatives, the new model will allow for more accurate forecasting of revenues for teams and their financial potential.

Additionally, Riot Games have made changes to the competition calendar, allowing teams to participate in external tournaments.

Payments from Riot to clubs in regional leagues will only be made after the company recovers its annual investments in LoL Esports. Upon profitability, Riot Games will pass on 50% of the revenue to league participants.
