Games come alive, and the fun never ends!

Counter-Strike creator reflects on the game’s iconic success

Min "Gooseman" Le

Min “Gooseman” Le, one of the creators of the legendary shooter Counter-Strike, shared his thoughts on the game’s phenomenal popularity. In an interview with Erik “SHOKE” Shokov, he admitted he never expected such success.

“It was a big surprise. It’s great to see, but I’m still very surprised. When we released CS, I didn’t think it would become such a big game. We just wanted to make a game that we and our friends could play and have fun with,” Le explained.

Gooseman highlighted that one reason for Counter-Strike’s longevity is its simplicity and stability:

“New players can pick it up and enjoy it, while old players come back because the game doesn’t change. Whether it’s 2000 or 25 years later, it still feels the same. Valve does a great job of maintaining the balance between tradition and relevance.”

He also emphasized the game’s role in esports:

“To reach the top in esports, you have to train for years. For me, CS is like football in terms of competitiveness. I hope people will still be playing it 25 years from now. That would be amazing.”

Min Le worked on the technical aspects of Counter-Strike and sold the rights to Valve in 2000, joining the company afterward. He left Valve in 2006. More details about his career can be found in our special feature.
