Starfield 2 will be an "Incredibly cool game," says former bethesda designer

Bruce Nesmith, former lead designer at Bethesda who left the company in 2021 after working on titles like Skyrim, recently shared his views on the potential success of Starfield 2 in an interview with VideoGamer. He compared the first Starfield to franchises like Mass Effect and Assassin’s Creed, whose sequels were received more positively than their initial releases.

I’m really looking forward to Starfield 2,” Nesmith said. “It’s going to be an incredibly cool game because it will address many of the issues players talked about. It’ll take everything good from the first game, add new elements, and fix many shortcomings.”

Nesmith also explained that creating a successful sequel often relies on continuity. “When we were working on Skyrim, we already had a major advantage: the groundwork and success of Oblivion, which in turn built on Morrowind. All we had to do was keep improving and adding new things. We didn’t have to start from scratch. If we had, it would have taken another two or three years of development,” he noted.

Last month, Starfield’s director Todd Howard emphasized the scale and uniqueness of Bethesda’s games, calling them “irresponsibly large” due to the minimal content that gets cut. “My job as a director in gaming is similar to that of a film director, bringing together all parts of art, tech, and storytelling created by our team to bring these worlds to life,” Howard shared.
