Blogger creates custom Steam Controller 2 with 3D printing and open-source firmware

Tech enthusiast and blogger TommyB has unveiled a homemade version of the Steam Controller 2, inspired by the Steam Deck and Valve’s original controller. Instead of a built-in screen, he used 3D-printed components that allow the controller to split into two separate parts — similar to Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons.

All key input elements — sticks, buttons, and trackpads — were adapted to the new modular design. According to the creator, the biggest challenge was developing the trackpad. Due to limited access to Steam Deck sensors, he integrated a prototype capacitive chip with similar characteristics.

The controller’s shell was 3D printed, based on the Steam Deck OLED housing. TommyB also rewrote the firmware from scratch and published it on GitHub, allowing anyone to replicate the build.

The project is still in development — the author plans to replace the dev board with a more affordable alternative. Despite its experimental form, the gamepad is fully functional and retains Valve’s signature spirit: a bit unconventional, but highly intriguing.
