Blizzard Entertainment is actively seeking to fill several key positions for an “upcoming open-world shooter game.” This recruitment drive follows earlier reports this year suggesting that Blizzard was developing a new StarCraft shooter.
The job listings, which include roles such as associate design director, senior designer, and principal designer for an unannounced project, frequently mention an “open-world shooter game.” However, the descriptions do not provide further details about the game.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier’s book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, claimed that a new StarCraft shooter was in the works at Blizzard. The book references two previous StarCraft shooter projects, stating: “Most of the developers were laid off, while a few would remain with Hay to begin incubating, of all things, a new StarCraft shooter. Perhaps after StarCraft Ghost and Ares, the third time would be the charm.”
Dan Hay, former head of the Far Cry series at Ubisoft, joined Blizzard after leaving Ubisoft in 2021. He was credited with overseeing Far Cry during its most successful period. Initially, it was reported in December 2022 that Hay was leading a survival game at Blizzard. However, in January 2024, it was announced that the game, codenamed Odyssey, had been cancelled.
Blizzard’s recent job postings have reignited speculation and excitement among fans eager to see what the company has in store with its new open-world shooter project.
