Assassin’s Creed Black Flag actor teases fans might replay the game amid growing remake buzz

Rumors of a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag have gained new momentum after Matt Ryan, the voice of Edward Kenway, dropped a subtle hint suggesting players might soon revisit the beloved pirate-themed entry.

Talk of a Black Flag remake first surfaced in 2023, when reports indicated the project was in its early development phase. According to sources, Ubisoft Singapore, the team behind the original game’s naval mechanics, is expected to contribute to the remake. The project is still believed to be in active development.

Now, actor Matt Ryan has added fuel to the speculation. During a recent fan convention, Ryan was asked if a fan had completed the original game. After they confirmed they had, he replied: “Well, you may have to beat it again.” When pressed further, he added, “There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything.”

This isn’t the first time hints about the remake have appeared. Earlier, collectible maker Pure Arts teased that something new involving Edward Kenway was in the works. During a livestream, when asked about the absence of an Edward Kenway figure, a representative said: “Assassin’s Creed fans out there, you should be aware that something is going on with Edward.” They added that any future figure release would “reflect that accordingly,” strongly implying a new version of the character is coming — likely in a remake.

Adding further weight to the rumors, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot previously said that players can expect remakes of past titles, designed to modernize classic experiences for new audiences. While Ubisoft has previously re-released older Assassin’s Creed games — such as The Ezio Collection in 2016 — those were remasters, not full-scale remakes.

With the combination of Ryan’s tease, developer involvement, and corporate hints, it seems increasingly likely that Black Flag will soon sail again — in modern form.
