After the Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as Famicom) solidified its position in the home gaming console market and saved the industry from complete collapse, Nintendo shifted its focus to the handheld console market.
Before the arrival of the Game Boy, several companies attempted to create portable gaming systems, but they were so unsuccessful that they have long been forgotten. However, with the introduction of the Nintendo console and a series of launch titles, games became something more than just sitting in front of a TV with a controller in hand.
The Japanese presentation of the Game Boy took place on April 21, 1989, and proved to be the real future of gaming. To date, approximately 118.7 million units of the console and the updated version, the GB Color, have been sold, along with the release of 1244 games.
Among the launch titles were:
- Alleyway
- Baseball
- Super Mario Land
- Yakuman
- Tennis (USA)
- Tetris (USA)
One of the launch titles of the console was Tetris, developed by Soviet programmer Alexey Pajitnov, which became one of the most successful projects of the device.
