Ghost of Yōtei shows off 22 minutes of gameplay featuring weapons, interrogations, and exploration camps

During PlayStation’s State of Play, developer Sucker Punch unveiled over 22 minutes of new gameplay for Ghost of Yōtei — a spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima.

Combat & Weapons

The main character, Atsu, wields five melee weapon types: a katana, odachi, spear, kusarigama, and dual swords, switching between them depending on enemy type. For example, the odachi is more effective against heavily armored foes.
Classic ranged weapons also make a return, including the bow and Tanegashima rifle, though they appear to be used sparingly.

Interrogation & Investigation

Instead of traditional map markers, players will gather clues by interrogating enemies and talking to NPCs.
Clues are displayed in a branching web that lets players choose different investigation paths — adding a light RPG-style detective element to the game.

Camps and Exploration

New temporary field camps allow players to rest, interact with NPCs, hear music, and gather valuable information.
A telescope system has also been introduced to help locate points of interest — useful given this is the largest map ever created by Sucker Punch.

Visual Presentation Modes

The game will feature three cinematic filters:

  • Kurosawa: a black-and-white film mode with Japanese voice acting and accurate lip sync.
  • Miike: more blood, stylized violence, and tighter combat close-ups.
  • Watanabe: lo-fi aesthetics inspired by Samurai Champloo, complete with a hip-hop soundtrack reminiscent of Nujabes.

Final Notes

Shifting focus from a traditional samurai to a morally gray assassin, Ghost of Yōtei is positioning itself as a fresh take on the genre, offering a broad open world with deep systems and stylized presentation.

The game launches on October 2, 2025 for PlayStation 5. A PC release has yet to be confirmed.
