Heaven Studio is fan-created software that lets players make their own remixes based on Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven series of rhythm games.
Players upload their own music tracks, then choose mini-games from Rhythm Heaven and combine them, controlling the actions to the beat of the music.
However, since the mini-games use sprites and sound effects taken from the Rhythm Heaven games, Nintendo filed a DMCA request, which led to the removal of the program.
According to TorrentFreak, Nintendo contacted GitHub with a DMCA notice and requested the removal of sprites and sound files from Heaven Studio.
In response, GitHub removed the entire Heaven Studio repository, as well as 290 forks (variations of Heaven Studio created by other users).
Heaven Studio was also available on itch.io, but it has now been removed from there as well, with the site displaying a message stating, “This tool’s files have been suspended for copyright (or trademark) claim.”
Although Heaven Studio had previously been targeted by fake DMCA notices from people pretending to be Nintendo, the tool’s creators stated on Twitter that this latest request appears to be legitimate, but they are working on a solution.
“Recently, HS on GitHub (and all forks) were taken down due to a DMCA request,” the tweet reads. “Unfortunately, upon review, it appears this request is genuine.
“But this is not the end! We are working on a plan B to shift focus away from infringing assets. More details will follow soon.”
This is the latest in a series of actions by Nintendo against fan-made projects, some of which use their assets.
