Benoit Richer has announced his departure from Ubisoft to launch his own indie game studio, sharing the news in a LinkedIn post.
Richer previously served as game director on Batman: Arkham Origins at Warner Bros. Montreal and later worked as co-development director on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Earlier in his career, he contributed to multiple Rainbow Six titles.
His exit comes shortly after a major leadership shakeup within the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which is now overseen by a new management team. As part of these changes, Codename Hexe—one of four premium titles in development—lost its creative director. The role has since been taken over by Jean Guesdon, as first reported by VGC.
In game development, the creative director typically defines the artistic vision, while the game director focuses on execution, including level design, systems, and gameplay mechanics.
Speaking last month, Guesdon noted that the project is being carefully developed by Ubisoft Montreal’s experienced team. He described Hexe as a darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience set during a pivotal historical period.
Guesdon also confirmed that he has stepped in as creative director alongside his role as Head of Content. He added that the team is taking its time to realize the game’s ambitious vision, meaning updates will remain limited for now.
Meanwhile, the multiplayer project Codename Invictus is making steady progress using a “test and learn” approach. Ubisoft also recently confirmed a remake of the fan-favorite Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is in development.
