Cloud Imperium Games’s space MMO Star Citizen has officially surpassed the $1 billion mark in community funding. The project reached this historic financial milestone more than a decade after its original announcement in 2012.
The game’s journey began with a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $2 million, after which the developers continued their long-running crowdfunding efforts. Despite its massive financial success, the game’s release timeline has shifted significantly. Originally planned for launch in 2014, the project still has no confirmed release date nearly 12 years later. The development team is currently aiming to release the game in 2026.
In an interview with Variety, game creator and designer Chris Roberts emphasized that fan support has been the key factor keeping the project moving forward. According to Roberts, major game publishers or private investors would not have provided the level of creative freedom and patience required for their ambitious development process. He also compared the long-term vision for Star Citizen to the enduring success of World of Warcraft, which has continued to unite gaming communities for more than twenty years.
