Sony is reportedly working on a new PlayStation handheld device

Sony is reportedly in the early stages of developing a new PlayStation handheld, according to Bloomberg, with a potential release still years away.

The device is said to be designed to expand Sony’s presence in the portable gaming market and compete with Nintendo, insiders claim. The concept may build on the PlayStation Portal, Sony’s recently launched streaming device for PS5 games, but it’s unclear if the new handheld will offer native gameplay.

If launched, the handheld could rival Nintendo’s upcoming Switch successor and Microsoft’s rumored plans for an Xbox portable device.

Earlier this month, Xbox head Phil Spencer confirmed that Microsoft is experimenting with handheld gaming prototypes. However, he emphasized that any such device is still years from release. Spencer explained that Xbox’s current focus is improving app performance on existing portable platforms and collaborating with hardware manufacturers to enhance compatibility.

For now, the handheld gaming market remains a battleground, with all major players exploring new opportunities.
