Paramount Pictures has officially approved the development of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, just days before Sonic 3 hits theaters this Friday.
According to Variety, the fourth installment is in early planning stages, with a tentative release window set for spring 2027. While plot details remain under wraps, fans are already speculating about the next chapter in the blue blur’s cinematic journey.
The Sonic franchise has proven to be a financial success for both Paramount and Sega, with the first two films grossing a combined $725.2 million at the box office, alongside an additional $180 million from home rentals and digital sales. Earlier this year, the franchise expanded with the release of Knuckles, a spinoff series on Paramount+.
As for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the movie is projected to dominate the North American box office this weekend, with an estimated opening of $55–$60 million across 3,800 theaters. Early reviews have been positive, with the film boasting an 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
All three Sonic films, including the upcoming third installment, were directed by Jeff Fowler and feature Jim Carrey as the iconic villain Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Fans can catch Sonic 3 in theaters starting this Friday, as anticipation builds for what’s next in the beloved series.
