Mass Effect TV series writer dismisses claims of rewrites aimed at non-gamers

A recent report from Hollywood newsletter The Ankler claimed that the upcoming series based on Assassin’s Creed, currently in development at Amazon Prime Video, may undergo partial rewrites to better appeal to non-gamers.

According to the report, the push for changes allegedly comes from Peter Friedlander, Amazon’s head of global TV, who is said to be actively overseeing script revisions across multiple Prime Video projects.

However, this claim has been disputed by the show’s writer and producer, Daniel Casey. Speaking on Bluesky, Casey said he was surprised by the report and denied ever being instructed to adjust the script for non-gaming audiences. He stated that he has not received any such direction and questioned the origin of those claims.

So, I can’t talk about the specifics of what I’m writing (I’ve signed NDAs, etc) — but for whatever it’s worth, that article by the Ankler caught me off guard just as much as you. I don’t know where that “non-gaming audiences” quote came from or who said it, but at no point has that been said to me.

Meanwhile, the long-anticipated Mass Effect TV adaptation is officially moving forward at Amazon. First rumored back in 2021, the project entered full development in 2024 under Amazon MGM Studios.

Casey is attached as writer and producer, joined by executive producers Karim Zreik, Ari Arad, and Michael Gamble. Gamble, who is also leading development on the next Mass Effect game, reassured fans that the project is still in progress despite limited updates since its 2023 teaser.

He also confirmed that the live-action series will take place after the events of the original trilogy, rather than retelling the story of Commander Shepard, emphasizing that Shepard’s journey remains the player’s own.
