Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the action-adventure title from MachineGames, launched in December for Xbox and PC to positive reviews and has already attracted over 4 million players, according to Microsoft.
The developer is currently working on a story expansion titled The Order of the Giants, scheduled for release in 2025. Meanwhile, the game is making its debut on PlayStation 5 this week.
In an interview with Variety, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at broader plans for the franchise:
“We’re really happy with ‘Indy’ and the reception from players. We do think there’s life in that franchise. I’ll just leave it at that. The PlayStation launch is going to be a cool moment.”
Spencer also praised MachineGames for their creative direction:
“The team took someone else’s IP and did something truly unique. Some people questioned the first-person perspective, but once you play, you realize — you are Indy.”
He added that Xbox studios will also be encouraged to develop new IPs and tell original stories going forward.
Set in 1937, between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, the single-player first-person game follows Indy on a globe-trotting adventure to prevent sinister forces from unlocking the ancient mystery of the Great Circle.
Douglas Reilly, head of Lucasfilm Games, also expressed interest in expanding the universe:
“We’re always looking for great stories. There’s plenty of space between the films where we could tell more and more Indiana Jones stories, which I think would be super interesting.”
