The Golmud Railway map, which debuted in Battlefield 4 as the largest map at launch, is returning to Battlefield 6 in a reimagined form. Level designer Luka Grepl-Malmgren explained that modern technology far surpasses what was available over a decade ago. He also noted that original artists returned to work on the update, making development a blend of experience and innovation. The main goal was not just to recreate the classic, but to implement ideas that were previously technically impossible.

The map still features a wide range of ground and air vehicles, including buggies, tanks, helicopters, and jets. One of the key elements remains the train in Conquest mode. Previously, it moved toward the controlling team’s base and was equipped with turrets. The map also included destructible environments, creating craters and affecting vehicle movement. In tactical modes, a village area played a major role, gradually being destroyed, while rooftops served as sniper positions.
In Battlefield 6, these systems have been significantly upgraded. The train now includes multiple carts, cover elements, and parkour opportunities, along with locomotives on both ends. Its route has changed—it now moves toward the enemy base, directly influencing the flow of battle.
According to the developer, this change addresses an issue where the train previously had limited impact on gameplay. Now it is easier to retake, and the controlling team gains a forward spawn point closer to enemy territory.
The aerial gameplay has been expanded even further, becoming the largest in the game’s multiplayer maps. This enables combat across diverse environments, including mountains, valleys, and glaciers.
On the ground, developers improved map balance by reducing open пространства and adding natural cover such as stone walls and vegetation. This enhances infantry mobility and reduces reliance on vehicles.
As a result, each key area is now more distinct and isolated, and controlling a single point no longer provides a global advantage across the map.
