Overwatch 2 launches a major reboot by dropping the “2” from its title

Blizzard is reverting to basics: the studio has officially removed the numeral from Overwatch 2’s title, returning to simply Overwatch.

During the Overwatch Spotlight presentation, initially covered by IGN, the company emphasized narrative direction. The new story arc Reign of Talon depicts Overwatch’s defeat at Talon’s hands. The narrative will unfold through in-game events, hero trailers, animated comics, short stories, and map updates spanning six seasons.

“Overwatch is more than just a number: it’s a living universe that continuously evolves, surprises, and unites players worldwide. This year marks a major shift in how the development team envisions Overwatch’s future, so we’re officially dropping the ‘2’ and moving forward simply as ‘Overwatch,'” Blizzard stated.

The game will introduce 10 new heroes this year. Five debut immediately with Season 1’s February 10 launch:

  • Domina (Tank) — Talon
  • Emre (Damage) — Talon
  • Mizuki (Support) — Talon
  • Anran (Damage) — Overwatch
  • Jetpack Cat (Support) — Overwatch

Five additional heroes will arrive throughout the year, integrated into the conflict narrative between Doomfist-led Talon and the Overwatch team. Blizzard is also preparing limited-time “Conquest” events where players choose factions and complete objectives to earn skins and cosmetics.

Gameplay will incorporate new sub-roles for each class featuring unique passive bonuses. Some existing heroes will receive reworks in 2026, though specific names and dates remain undisclosed. Additional plans include a refreshed menu system, the return of post-match endorsement cards, expanded brand collaborations, and new skins.
