Last year, Bungie finalized the story of Destiny’s Light and Dark Saga’s 10-year story arc, with the release of The Final Shape. They then move on to a brand new story arc called The Fate Saga, which kicked off with The Edge of Fate in July 2025. The next major expansion in the Fate Saga, Renegades, launches Dec 2nd and is heavily influenced by the franchise of Star Wars.
Game director Tyson Green shared that due to the expectation vs reality of players not having an enjoyable experience with The Edge of Fate, the team learned valuable lessons from this experience. Following The Final Shape, which closed out a 10-year narrative arc, many players left the game for good simply due to the nature of grinding and leveling up as opposed to rewarding players with meaningful rewards.
Considering this feedback, the team has learned a significant amount about what players want, as players want more than just a higher number for their indicators: players want tangible rewards for your time spent playing games. By utilizing a 2x a year expansion release schedule, Bungie can now evolve faster than before.
For Renegades, the team has fully embraced the theme of a “space western” and has been significantly influenced by Star Wars while still maintaining Destiny’s identity. The expansion will add back into the game a heat-based weapon class that is influenced by the blasters found within the core Star Wars franchise.
