Call of Duty and Dead Space Developer Glen Schofield Voices Strong Support for AI in Game Development

Veteran developer Glen Schofield, best known for his work on Call of Duty, Dead Space, and The Callisto Protocol, shared his thoughts on his career and the future of game technology in a new interview.

According to Schofield, he is already actively using artificial intelligence in his work and sees it as an essential tool to speed up and reduce the cost of game production.

“Everybody’s talking about AI. I’m right in the thick of it. Today it helps create concept art and cinematics, but for players the gameplay matters more. In five to ten years, AI will evolve into a proper engine. For now, it’s just a mix of tools that still need to settle,” Schofield explained.

He also drew parallels with the rise of Photoshop and motion capture, which were once seen as threats to creative jobs but ultimately raised the bar and created new opportunities. Schofield believes the same will happen with AI: professionals will have to adapt, while the industry as a whole will become more efficient.

“I am 100% behind AI. I was there when the internet started, and people said everyone would have a website — and now they do. The same will happen with AI. It’s here, and we need to work with it,” he added.

According to the GDC 2025 survey, 52% of developers said their companies already use generative AI tools. However, curiosity around the technology has dropped: only 9% of studios expressed interest in adopting it this year, compared to 15% in 2024.

Earlier this year, Schofield stated on LinkedIn that he may have directed his last AAA project due to struggles securing funding for his next game.
