Valve has officially banned the release of Classic Offensive, a fan project aimed at recreating the classic CS 1.6 experience inside CS:GO. The news was shared by the developers on social media. The mod had been in development for over eight years.
Back in 2017, the project was approved through Valve’s Steam Greenlight program, and the team even received some support from Valve representatives. However, in early 2025, just as the mod was preparing for release, Valve rejected the submission without explanation and ceased communication.
In response, the developers planned to launch Classic Offensive on ModDB, but shortly before the release, they received a legal takedown notice from Valve, citing copyright infringement and unauthorized use of intellectual property. The letter warned that failure to comply could result in legal action.
Classic Offensive was a faithful remake of CS 1.6, built on the CS:GO engine, featuring original maps, weapons, and gameplay mechanics. The project had gained a strong following, with over 27,000 users tracking its progress on X (formerly Twitter). While gameplay footage was shared, the mod itself now appears unlikely to see an official release.
