Discord introduces experimental age verification using facial scans or ID

Discord has begun testing a new age verification system for users in the UK and Australia. To access content marked as sensitive or to change related settings, some users must now verify their age using facial scanning or a government-issued ID.

How the system works

Users can choose one of two verification methods:

  • Facial scan: via a webcam or smartphone camera, following on-screen instructions.
  • ID scan: by scanning a QR code with a mobile device, then submitting a photo of a valid ID (e.g., passport or driver’s license).

Discord emphasizes that the process is one-time only. If a user believes their age was incorrectly assessed, they can retry verification or contact support for manual review.

Why it’s being implemented

The move comes in response to new legislation in the UK and Australia aimed at restricting minors’ access to sensitive online content. Studies have shown that many children aged 8 to 17 use Discord, often without having verified their age.

Data privacy

Discord claims that data provided for age checks is not stored on its servers or by partners. Facial scans are processed locally on the user’s device, and ID photos are deleted immediately after verification is completed.
