Rockstar released a major update for GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition three years after the problematic release

Three years after its problematic launch, Rockstar has released a significant update for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition on current-gen consoles and PC. The game, which includes GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas, faced criticism for its disappointing visuals and presentation. However, the new update, released on Tuesday, promises substantial improvements.

Patch notes indicate that a classic lighting mode, previously available only on mobile versions, has now been added to consoles. This mode has significantly enhanced the game’s visuals, and fans have noticed even more changes than Rockstar initially mentioned.

An X user named Besk extensively detailed the improvements they discovered in the game. These include new effects for fire, rain, fog, and glass-breaking, updated animations, additional bloom and lighting effects, and more. The update also adds new features: players can now run while aiming certain weapons, pause cutscenes, track the date and time of game saves, and see their exact location on the world map.

Despite launch issues such as technical glitches and the discovery of unlicensed music in game files—leading to the temporary removal of the PC version—sales reports indicate that the game sold around 10 million copies.

While Take-Two has not confirmed exact sales figures for GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that the collection has performed “great” since its release.
