Halo Infinite is introducing a third-person mode

At the 2024 Halo World Championship in Seattle, it was announced that Halo Infinite will receive an update in November, introducing a third-person mode for the first time in the series’ history. This update will allow players to experience gameplay from an over-the-shoulder perspective, adding a significant change to the game’s dynamics.

As senior community manager John ‘Unyshek’ Junyszek explained, third-person mode will be enabled on a mode level, meaning players won’t be able to manually switch between first- and third-person views — it will be preset for specific game modes.

Additionally, third-person mode will also be integrated into Forge, giving creators the ability to toggle individual players or all participants between first- and third-person perspectives.

“It’s fun to play this way, offering more situational awareness and letting you see your Spartan in action, which is super cool,” Unyshek said. “Internally, our team has been loving it, and I’m excited for everyone to try it later this year.”

Colin Cove, senior software engineer at Skybox Labs, noted that the team invested significant effort into fine-tuning the aiming system for accuracy in the third-person perspective.

“The camera position has changed dramatically,” Junyszek explained. “Where it used to be in the player’s head for first-person, now with third-person, it’s behind the player, requiring new inputs for the aiming system. It took a lot of work to get this right.”

With the third-person mode and new features in Forge, Halo Infinite is gearing up to offer an expanded and dynamic experience for players and creators alike.
