Square Enix stated that the sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 "did not meet expectations"

In a recently published results briefing, originally presented in May, Square Enix admitted that “profits unfortunately did not meet [its] expectations.” The report notes that initial sales of Foamstars and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in Q4 were weaker than anticipated.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released about a month before this investor briefing. All three underperforming titles were initially PS5 exclusives, leading to speculation that additional revenue could have been generated if they were also released on Xbox Series X/S.

Since the briefing, Final Fantasy 16 has been released on PC, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remains a PS5 exclusive. However, the first entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy was eventually released on PC, so it is expected that the sequel will follow.

The report also reveals Square Enix‘s shift to a multiplatform strategy. The company aims to create a global environment that allows more players to enjoy its major franchises and AAA titles, including those from its back catalog.

Foamstars will go free-to-play next month, having previously been sold on the PlayStation Store for $30 / £25.

The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is confident that the third part will be one of the greatest video games ever made.
