Eight weeks before it was set to hit theaters, Warner Bros. and New Line have unexpectedly delayed Mortal Kombat 2 by seven months. The film will now premiere on May 15, 2026.
According to Deadline, the move was made purely for financial reasons, as October is considered a weak month for box office performance. Test screenings for the sequel have reportedly been strong, which may have encouraged the shift to a more lucrative release window.
In the follow-up, Earthrealm’s champions — joined by Karl Urban (The Boys) as Johnny Cage — face off in a battle against the dark reign of Shao Kahn.
The sequel was first announced in January 2022 after the success of the previous year’s film. Simon McQuoid, who made his feature debut with 2021’s Mortal Kombat, returns as director, with a script by Moon Knight’s Jeremy Slater.
The cast also includes Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, along with Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.
