Valve’s new Steam Controller leaked via AI-generated image

An AI-generated image of Valve’s new game controller has leaked from insider Brad Lynch. Lynch says that in order to protect his source at Valve, the image was created this way using an actual image of the controller.

In terms of appearance, the controller looks very similar to the controller render that was unintentionally leaked online back in late 2024 due to Valve’s mistake. The new image reveals a more polished shape on the body of the controller, a newer grip texture, and a more compact button arrangement.

The supposed main feature of the controller is a distance sensor to help detect how far a player’s hands are from the grips, much like the Valve Index controllers, except the new Steam controller is lacking a full finger tracking feature. This enables the controller to sense when it is picked up and change vibration or haptic feedback in real time.

According to Lynch, Valve is near the finish line for the announcement, and internal developers have begun testing early prototypes. It is rumored to launch under the name “Steam Controller” but without the “2” within the title.
