Yogscast Games has announced that its upcoming title, The Royal Writ, will launch on Steam on August 7. Developed by Save Sloth Studios, the game blends card-based strategy with permadeath mechanics in a fresh take on lane-based battles.
Originally created as a 48-hour prototype for the Ludum Dare game jam, the concept garnered strong feedback, eventually evolving into a fully-fledged release.
Described as “a lane-based card game with permadeath”, The Royal Writ puts players in charge of dispatching the king’s loyal (and not-so-loyal) creatures to solve problems across the realm—whether through diplomacy or a well-timed siege.
According to the game’s description, “Sometimes a kingdom’s issues can be solved with a letter. And if that fails? A little destruction gets the message across.” Players collect units and strategically deploy them onto procedurally generated battlefields, each with unique environmental challenges.
Each creature features its own strengths and vulnerabilities. Some are land-bound, others swim through water, while flying units can bypass terrain entirely. Positioning and timing are crucial to success.
A key feature of The Royal Writ is permadeath: cards you’ve upgraded and relied on can be lost permanently if you make the wrong move. The game also includes mini-games that allow players to enhance and evolve their cards between battles.
A new trailer for The Royal Writ is now available, offering a closer look at the quirky art style and fast-paced tactical gameplay. The game is set to arrive on August 7, exclusively on Steam.
