Journalists from the Brazilian esports portal Dust2.br (one of the media assets of HLTV) conducted an interesting investigation into the request made by the organizers of the GET Rio 2024 tournament, the Brazilian Confederation of Games and Esports (CBGE), for an additional $475 thousand just days before the event.
CBGE requested an additional 2.5 million Brazilian reals ($475 thousand) within the framework of an existing contract approved and transferred to an entity subordinate to the State Secretariat of Sports and Leisure of Brazil (SEEL).
According to the organizers, this additional amount is necessary to complete the preparation for the tournament. The information was obtained by Dust2 Brasil through the Access to Information Act.
Before this request, the organizers had already spent over 4.5 million Brazilian reals ($860 thousand) on the tournament and stated that “there are no additional funds to complete the contracts necessary for the event.”
The total cost of the tournament is over 7 million Brazilian reals or $1.3 million. The expenses for organizing the GET Rio 2024 tournament already include an additional $475 thousand.
The tournament has also been postponed multiple times due to uncertainty with private sponsors and difficulties in funding through the Sports Incentive Law. Paulo Ribas, president of CBGE, emphasized that they will continue working on the event even if they do not receive additional financial support.
