The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to Receive an Unofficial VR Mod With Full Motion Controller Support

The emulated version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) will receive an unofficial mod with full VR support for PC later this week, bringing six degrees of freedom (6DOF) to the game.

The mod, called BetterVR, is developed by a creator known as Crementif and promises fully stereoscopic rendering along with 6DOF VR support when running the game through the Cemu emulator. It also features full hand and motion tracking, allowing players to use weapons, torches, and even interact directly with Bokoblin hands.

The project is designed specifically for the Wii U version of the game and requires users to own a legal copy, as game files are not included. Since BetterVR operates via the popular Cemu PC emulator, it remains compatible with a wide range of existing mods.

“I’ve put a lot of effort into this mod, but not everything works perfectly yet. Expect some rough edges that will be improved over time,” Crementif noted. “AMD GPUs may not be supported at launch — during testing, we were unable to get the mod running on AMD systems due to driver errors.”

The developer also warned that performance will be lower than native VR titles because of the heavy CPU load caused by emulation. However, frame interpolation reportedly made the experience “perfectly playable” on several test systems, including setups with an Intel Core i9-13900K and RTX 4090, as well as a Ryzen 7600X paired with an RTX 3060.

BetterVR will launch as an open-source project on December 30 and will be available for free download on Crementif’s GitHub page.
