Roblox plans to introduce new safety measures after reports surfaced regarding child endangerment. According to the company, they will take additional steps to ensure the safety of young users on the popular online platform.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that at least 24 people in the US had been arrested since 2018 for abducting or abusing victims they met on Roblox. The report revealed that in 2022, Roblox reported nearly 3,000 cases of child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), a number that jumped to over 13,000 last year.
The company condemned the report for “glaring mischaracterizations.” Now, Roblox plans to introduce a new account type that will allow parents or guardians full control over what their children do on the platform. A parent account can be linked to a child’s account to monitor usage and block content.
According to Juliet Chaitin-Lefcourt, a Roblox representative, these updates are part of the company’s commitment to creating one of the safest online environments for users, particularly young ones. More information is expected next month.
