Roblox has unveiled new safety measures aimed at protecting players under 13. Last month, the company announced plans to enhance child safety on its popular online platform, promising more details in November. These details have now been shared on the Roblox Creator Hub site, outlining several features that will soon be restricted for younger players.
Developers who create Roblox experiences are now required to complete a questionnaire for every experience they want to be accessible to players under 13. The questionnaire assesses whether the content is appropriate for all ages or suitable for ages 9 and up. Creators have until December 3 to complete this process, or their experiences will become “unplayable, unsearchable, and undiscoverable” for players under 13.
Starting November 18, various interactive features will be limited to players aged 13 and older. These include “social hangouts” and “free-form user creation.” Social hangouts are defined as experiences where the primary purpose is to communicate with others via text or voice chat. This does not include role-playing or simulation experiences where users adopt different roles or use items for role-play.
Free-form user creation refers to features that allow users to draw or write in 2D and share those creations without moderation. However, it does not include user creations assembled with pre-moderated 3D assets.
Roblox addressed developers, acknowledging the tight deadline but emphasizing the importance of cooperation to maintain a safe and civil environment for users of all ages.
