Resident Evil Requiem — the latest entry in Resident Evil by Capcom — has achieved a record launch, selling 6 million copies worldwide in just 17 days, making it the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history.
Previously, Capcom reported 5 million copies sold within the first week, and the latest figures confirm that the game continues to perform at a strong pace. Overall, the Resident Evil series has now surpassed 183 million copies sold since its debut in 1996.
According to Capcom, the success is driven by a combination of factors, including a large-scale marketing campaign and a game design that appeals to both newcomers and long-time fans. Multiple difficulty levels make the survival-horror experience more accessible, while still preserving the tension and atmosphere the series is known for.
The company also confirmed that post-launch support is just beginning. A story expansion is already in development, while upcoming updates will introduce a photo mode and a mysterious mini-game that has yet to be revealed.
Record sales arrive ahead of Resident Evil’s 30th anniversary
The strong launch comes as Capcom prepares to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2026. The company has announced a range of themed activities, including a collaboration with Universal Studios Japan, where special attractions or events based on the game are planned, as well as orchestral concerts across Japan, the United States, and Europe.
Despite its impressive start, Requiem still needs to sell several million more copies to enter Capcom’s Platinum Titles list — the company’s top 10 best-selling games of all time. Currently, the chart is led by the Resident Evil 2 remake with 18.2 million copies sold, while Resident Evil 3 holds the 10th spot at 10.9 million.
If current momentum continues, Requiem is well-positioned to join that list in the near future.
Growing mod scene and solid critical reception
Alongside its commercial success, the game has already developed a vibrant modding community, particularly on PC. Players are creating both gameplay tweaks — such as a more challenging “No-Bite Mode” — and humorous modifications.
One standout mod even replaces the vehicle of Leon S. Kennedy with the Patty Wagon from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
Critical reception has been generally positive, though some reviewers noted a lack of innovation. In a review for GameSpot, journalist Phil Hornshaw wrote:
“Ultimately, it leans heavily on past successes and nostalgia, without offering many new ideas — but it understands its strengths and executes them exceptionally well.”
With strong sales, ongoing support, and anniversary momentum, Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to become one of Capcom’s most successful releases in recent years, especially amid the continued popularity of the survival-horror genre.
