Blizzard has confirmed the unexpected passing of Bill Petras, one of the founding developers of Overwatch and a veteran of the video game industry. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Petras served as the art director for the original Overwatch, playing a crucial role in shaping the game’s iconic visual style. He was one of the founding members of the team that built the game from the ground up. Prior to his work at Blizzard, he contributed to landmark titles such as Halo and World of Warcraft.
“We’ve lost a dear friend, a leader, and an incredible artist. Bill was a kind, humble, and caring person who inspired everyone around him,” the Overwatch team said in an official statement.
Colleagues described him as someone who helped define the studio’s creative culture and supported younger developers through mentorship and leadership. His legacy goes beyond the games he helped create—he left a lasting impact on those he worked with.
Blizzard and the Overwatch team have extended their condolences to Bill Petras’s family and loved ones.
