Nintendo introduces GameShare: local multiplayer on Switch 2 without extra game copies

Nintendo has unveiled GameShare, a new feature launching alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, allowing players to enjoy local multiplayer even if only one person owns the game.

In a demonstration video published on the Nintendo Today app, a Switch 2 player selects Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, which is getting a free Switch 2 upgrade. A new GameShare option appears in the main menu. Nearby users with a Switch or Switch 2 console can then join the session without needing to own the game themselves.

Unlike simple screen sharing, GameShare provides each player with their own visual perspective in the game. For example, during a session of the board game Renegade, each participant sees the board from their unique viewpoint, rather than just mirroring the host’s screen.

The feature also works with the original Nintendo Switch. The Switch 2 launch title Survival Kids, which supports three-player co-op, allows players on different generations of the console to connect via GameShare.

According to Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto, the technology behind GameShare is inspired by the Wii U’s streaming system, which sent different images to the TV and the Wii U GamePad.

“We wanted players to share games instantly and play together competitively or cooperatively,” Kawamoto explained. “It wasn’t easy to pull off, but it was worth it.”

GameShare is shaping up to be one of Switch 2’s most exciting new features, offering a more accessible and connected multiplayer experience without the need for multiple game purchases.
