Nintendo will not be present as an exhibitor at Gamescom 2024, according to a statement provided to German publication Games Wirtschaft by a company spokesperson. The event is scheduled to take place in Cologne, Germany, from August 21-25, but the list of exhibitors has not yet been announced.
Nintendo participated as an exhibitor at last year’s Gamescom, where it showcased tech demos for the rumored Switch 2 behind closed doors. In February, Nintendo internally delayed the launch of its next-gen console from this year to early 2025.
One source in the publishing industry suggested that the delay was to ensure stronger first-party software for the console, while others speculated that it was to avoid potential hardware supply issues.
Nintendo recently discontinued online play for the 3DS and Wii U, following the closure of the eShops for both systems in March 2023. However, players can still access offline gameplay, and online functionality will remain for Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter, which are still in use by players.
For the foreseeable future, users can continue to download update data and re-download purchased software and DLC from the 3DS and Wii U eShops.
