Akio Sakamoto, the technical director at Kojima Productions, believes that the move from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 did not represent a major technological leap.
He stated that while PS5 does offer some improvements — such as reduced loading times — the overall difference between the two consoles isn’t that significant.
“The most noticeable improvement from a technical standpoint is the reduced load times. But honestly, the difference between the two hardware systems isn’t that big. Rather, PS5 just provides more efficient ways to achieve similar goals,” Sakamoto explained.
He also noted that for artists, working on PS5 comes with clear advantages.
For example, world design has become much easier — designers no longer need to rely on workarounds as they did on PS4. However, this new freedom has also introduced side effects and technical challenges for programmers. In some ways, it’s created an environment where “artists are no longer under control.”
Sakamoto added that this type of hardware discussion isn’t new.
Back in 2023, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden said we would no longer see breakthroughs like the leap from PS1 to PS2. According to him, we’re already nearing the ceiling of what hardware can achieve.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to release on June 26, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The game will feature new biomes, a base ship, and boss evasion mechanics.
