CD Projekt Red officially moves Cyberpunk 2 into pre-production with nearly 100 developers involved

Polish studio CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 — currently known by its codename Project Orion — has officially entered the pre-production phase. As of April 30, the project has 96 developers actively working on it, although no release date has been announced yet.

The game is being led by CD Projekt Red North America, with studios in Boston and Vancouver, supported by the company’s main office in Warsaw. The project is headed by Gabe Amatangelo, who previously led the successful Phantom Liberty expansion.

Project Orion is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, aiming to create a more immersive and expansive game world. According to Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the original Cyberpunk tabletop universe, the sequel will introduce a second major city described as a dystopian version of Chicago — distinct in tone and atmosphere from Night City.

Following the success of Phantom Liberty, which sold over 10 million copies, CD Projekt Red is committed to avoiding past mistakes and ensuring the next Cyberpunk game meets high-quality standards. Project Orion is not expected to launch before 2028.

At the same time, the studio is also developing a new title in The Witcher franchise, highlighting CD Projekt Red’s ambitious roadmap for the years ahead.
