A New Gothic from a German Studio? Action RPG Asterfel “in the 2000s Style” Announced, Featuring an Open World and Mutantsп

A German indie studio, Mysteria Studio, has introduced its first game — Asterfel, an action RPG in the style of the early 2000s, which carries an atmosphere similar to the Gothic series.

This visual style is no coincidence, but rather a tribute and inspiration from their fellow countrymen. The team includes designers and artists who previously worked on The Witcher and Gothic. Now, they have revealed the world of Asterfel — an open and diverse setting that ranges from wastelands and ruins to dense jungles and ancient temples.

The main story of the game takes place on an island called Asterfel, where in the king’s mines, an ancient sleeping god was accidentally awakened. This event released mutants and other horrors into the world. Alongside these events, a shipwreck occurs, leaving the protagonist as the only survivor. The character must find their path among three factions:

  • Royal Guards — warriors who serve the king and rely on swords.
  • The Locals — rebels seeking to free slaves from the mines and factories.
  • Scholars — mages who study the nature of magic and its impact on the world.

From the faction descriptions, one can infer that the plot will involve a conflict between the people and the royal family. The rebels are opposing government policies that rely on slave labor for the country’s development. Likely, the mages will play both sides in this conflict, though many details about the story remain unclear, and official confirmation is still pending.

Regarding gameplay: players can choose to join one of the factions or mix their skills. The game features various types of weapons, including swords, bows, and magical runes, allowing players to change and combine fighting styles. This flexibility will be essential, as the further players travel, the stronger the enemies and more dangerous the territories become. The developers promise engaging story quests, faction-based narratives, and the ability to influence events on the island.

Asterfel is being developed for PC, with no console ports announced yet. The game has already appeared on Steam, with a release date marked as “coming soon.” A demo version may be available in the future.
