Following the cancellation of Respawn’s first-person shooter this week, a developer post on X revealed that the Star Wars strategy game is still in development. The post acknowledged the challenges faced by the industry last week and emphasized that their team remains dedicated to their project, unaffected by recent events.
Last week was difficult for the industry, and more so because of our strong relationships within the other teams at Respawn.
But for those asking, we are still hard at work, and our game was unaffected by last week's news.— BIT REACTOR (@bitreactor) March 2, 2024
Details about the game are scarce, as it was announced alongside Respawn’s shooter and the third installment in the Star Wars Jedi franchise.
Respawn’s now-cancelled game, announced in 2022, was led by former LucasArts veteran and Medal of Honor co-creator Peter Hirschmann, known for his work on the original Battlefront games and The Force Unleashed series.
In a statement released on Wednesday, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele announced nearly 700 company-wide layoffs and stated that Respawn would refocus its efforts on the Jedi and Apex Legends series. She highlighted Respawn’s ability to create exceptional gaming experiences and the strong player interest in Jedi and Respawn’s existing brands, leading to the decision to shift away from the Star Wars FPS action game and prioritize projects based on owned brands.
