Sony has shared new details regarding the potential pricing and launch timeline of the upcoming PlayStation 6, highlighting concerns over rising memory and component costs.
During a Q&A session following the company’s latest financial report, Hiroki Totoki explained that increasing prices for components such as RAM are driving up manufacturing expenses and could significantly affect future console production costs.
At the same time, Sony confirmed it has already secured the required supply of components for the remainder of 2026 and has partially locked in pricing agreements to reduce short-term risks.
Speaking about the PS6, Totoki stated that Sony has not yet finalized either the release window or the price of the next-generation console, as the long-term component market remains uncertain.
According to him, the company expects memory shortages to continue into fiscal year 2027, which could keep hardware prices elevated. Because of this, Sony is carefully evaluating its next steps before making final decisions.
Totoki also revealed that Sony is exploring different ways to lower hardware costs and may even consider adjustments to its business model for the PS6 in order to create the most effective long-term strategy.
Despite concerns about pricing, Sony noted that the number of active users across PlayStation platforms continues to grow, suggesting that consumer demand remains strong.
The topic of the PlayStation 6 release date has become increasingly debated among analysts, especially as the rapid growth of the AI industry continues to put pressure on the global memory supply chain.
Earlier this year, David Gibson claimed that Sony may extend the lifecycle of the PS5, potentially delaying the arrival of the PS6 longer than previously expected.
