Donkey Kong Land is now playable on Nintendo Switch Online

The classic Game Boy title, originally released in 1995, is now available through the Game Boy app on Nintendo’s online service.

Developed by Rare, Donkey Kong Land was praised for adapting the iconic art style of Donkey Kong Country from the SNES to the 8-bit Game Boy. However, it’s not a direct port—this is a completely separate game with unique levels.

The game features a playful meta storyline: Cranky Kong claims that Donkey Kong Country only succeeded because of its graphics. To prove him wrong, Donkey and Diddy Kong let King K. Rool steal their banana hoard again, showing that the game is just as fun on an 8-bit handheld.

With the addition of Donkey Kong Land, the Game Boy and Game Boy Color library on Switch Online now includes 30 titles in the West (and 32 in Japan).

The standard Switch Online subscription grants access to Game Boy, Game Boy Color, NES, and SNES games. Pricing starts at £3.49/€3.99/$3.99 for one month, £6.99/€7.99/$7.99 for three months, and £17.99/€19.99/$19.99 for a full year.

Subscribers to the Switch Online Expansion Pack also gain access to libraries of Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and Game Boy Advance games.
