Metro Awakening announced: Release date and new Trailer at PlayStation State of Play

At the recent PlayStation State of Play conference, a new trailer was revealed, and the release date for the VR prequel to the Metro series, titled Metro Awakening, was announced. The game is set to release on November 7, 2024.

Metro Awakening will be the first game in the Metro universe not developed by 4A Games but by Vertigo Games, known for their VR projects like Arizona Sunshine. The events of this game take place before Metro 2033 and tell the backstory of Khan, who must leave his peaceful life behind to search for his missing wife.

In the game, players will take on the role of Serdar, a doctor who faces deadly threats in the metro, including radiation and darkness, while searching for his wife and the medicine she desperately needs. Players will need to balance life and death, navigating the spiritual and material worlds to awaken their future self.

The gameplay remains traditional for the Metro series, but with the integration of VR, adding new immersive elements like wiping the gas mask and manually reloading weapons. Although the game was presented at a PlayStation VR2 event, it will also be available for Meta Quest 3 and Steam VR.

Developers at Vertigo Games aimed to bring the core features of the series into VR, including the unique arsenal of homemade weapons, gas mask usage, filters, and mutant enemies.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian studio 4A Games is currently working on a full-fledged sequel to Metro, with a release expected between 2025 and 2026. Development began in 2019, but the storyline was reimagined due to the ongoing war, focusing on political and anti-war themes relevant to current events.
